Aquinas Parents,
I am constantly asked about scholarships. As you search the web, or if you are contacted by telephone please be careful. Protect yourself by becoming an educated consumer. Many scam operations have quasi-official sounding names; they use words like "National", "Federal", or "Foundation" as part of their name. Typically they want to charge you to find scholarships, and may offer a "money back guarantee".
Watch for the following tell-tale signs of a scam:
"The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back."
"You can't get this information anywhere else."
"We'll do all the work."
"We just need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship."
The Aquinas College Planning Notebook lists recommended web sites to search for scholarships. Remember, when your son or daughter is accepted at a university contact their financial aid office immediately and ask about scholarships. If your son or daughter is entering a specific major, ask about scholarships in the school/ department in which they will be attending. I have listed sites that you may want to visit:
If you apply for a scholarship you probably will be asked if you have completed the FAFSA form. If you have not, I have the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and I advise completing this process now. I have the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet that will assist you when you go on line to apply. Your son or daughter may stop by my office to get the federal form.
Thank you.
