The Grad at Graduation

Aquinas occupies a unique position in the community. It is a viable educational institution that provides a unique, value-oriented quality education in the setting of a Faith Community.

Openness to Growth

The Aquinas High School student at the time of graduation has matured as a person emotionally, intellectually, physically, socially, and spiritually to a level that reflects some intentional responsibility for one's own growth. The graduate is beginning to reach out in this personal development, seeking opportunities to stretch the mind, imagination, feelings and spiritual consciousness.

Faith in Action

By graduation the individual has achieved considerable knowledge of the needs of local and wider communities and is preparing for the day of active involvement in these communities as a competent, concerned and responsible member. The graduate has begun to acquire the skills and motivation necessary to live for others and is well on the way to establishing a personal identity. The individual is also on the threshold of being able to move beyond self-interest or self-centeredness in relationships and is beginning to comprehend deeper levels of relationships in which Christ becomes the focus of one's life.

Intellectual Competence

By graduation the Aquinas High School student will exhibit a mastery of those academic requirements for advanced levels of education. While these requirements are categorized by departmental subject areas, the student will have developed many intellectual skills and understandings which go beyond academic requirements for college entrance. The student, moreover, is beginning to recognize the need for intellectual integrity in this personal quest for spiritual truth and a response to issues of justice in the wider community.

Spiritual Development

At graduation the Aquinas High School student will have a firm understanding of the beliefs of the Catholic faith, its sacramental system, organization, practices, and spirituality. The student will be prepared and committed to exemplify a personal and professional life reflecting this Catholic Foundation. The individual will have developed the basis for personal spiritual growth and a deeper love of God, demonstrated by love of neighbor in the social setting.

RELIGION

According to St. Thomas Aquinas, the patron of our school, all knowledge brings us closer to God. All learning, therefore must be God-oriented. In a materialistic, amoral, and even atheistic society and with the legal restrictions placed on schools in the public systems, such a God-oriented education is possible only in a school which has religion at the center of its operation. Aquinas is such a school.

The religion classes at Aquinas instruct students in Catholic Christianity to help them to understand what it means to be an adopted child of God whose inheritance is the Kingdom of God, to appreciate and assimilate Christian values, and to develop right and certain consciences. It is fervently hoped that by these means, the students will live there lives in such a manner that they will ultimately be transformed into complete union with Jesus Christ.

RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES

The religious formation of students and faculty involves more than the formal classes in Christian doctrine. Both are given many opportunities to practice their religion. Non-Catholic students are expected, as their conscience leads them, to attend and to participate in all religious activities which are held for the entire Aquinas community. Among the religious activities which take place through-out the school year are:

  • communal prayer three times daily;
  • communal prayer during each class period;
  • the celebration of the Eucharist by the entire Aquinas community on special, specified days;
  • the celebration of the Eucharist by classes in the school chapel;
  • penance services during Advent and Lent;
  • student retreats;
  • prayer services;
  • numerous opportunities to serve in love the less fortunate members of the Augusta community.
